Otter Wishes – DEADLINE: Friday DEC 1st

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Each year we send our 5th graders off to middle school with “Otter Wishes” in our yearbook. The yearbook committee is now collecting these wishes for publication in this year’s yearbook.

The “ad” will be put into a standard format so that all you need to submit is the message and/or picture(s). They will be located in the back of the yearbook and can contain one or two photograph(s) and a message perhaps congratulating the student on graduation, a specific achievement, or just general well wishes.

The cost is $10 and we can allow only one ad per child. table for number of words and pictures. Ads and payment must be received by Friday, December 1st 2017. No exceptions can be made as we have deadline obligations with the yearbook company. All formatting and sizing of pictures and text will be done by the yearbook staff.

Guidelines for ads:

  1. We strongly suggest that you do not submit hard copy original photographs — especially baby photographs due to the possibility of a lost or damaged photograph. Ideally, digital pictures and text should be emailed to  If you do submit a hard copy photo then please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you’d like your picture back.  Please turn in the hard copy photo to your child’s 5th grade teacher, c/o “Otter Wishes”.
  1. Parents understand that if you submit low resolution photos, the quality of the printed photo may be poor in the yearbook.

2 Step Process:

  1. $10 payment can be made at the online school store. Go to and look for “Otter Wishes”.  You can also make checks payable to “Oak Grove PTA‟ and give to your 5th grader’s teacher.  Please include the child’s name & “Otter Wishes” on the check!  Please place check/cash in an envelope and specify “Otter Wishes”.
  2. All wording & pictures should be emailed to: Becca Smith
  3. Please only send jpegsdo not send pictures in a word document
  4. Please include the child’s name & teacher’s name in the email!

Help still needed with Ollie Fest


We still need volunteers and baked goods to make this year’s Ollie Fest a success! Ollie Fest is Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 11am to 3pm. Please visit the Cake Walk SignUp Genius to sign up to bring goodies for the cake walk.

Volunteers are needed to sell tickets and help with some games. Please visit the Ollie Fest Volunteer SignUp Genius to join the fun! Each volunteer will receive one wrist band for their child. This wrist band will provide your child unlimited access to games, activities, Game Truck, Bouncy House, cake walk, 1 face paint, 1 fairy hair & 1 balloon animal. Wrist bands will cost $10 at the door.

Spirit Night at 3 Amigos tomorrow!

Our next Spirit Night is tomorrow at 3 Amigos. Please come out and support Oak Grove!

Where: 3 Amigos Mexican Restaurant (3470 Kildaire Farm Rd – Mill Pond shopping center, next to the dollar store)

When: Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 5pm to 8pm

What: 3 Amigos will donate a portion of sales from all Oak Grove patrons to our PTA. We will also be raffling off a $30 gift certificate for 3 Amigos. Come enjoy great food and drinks, while supporting our PTA and a locally owned business.

Oak Grove Science Fair

You are invited to participate in Oak Grove’s annual Science Fair! Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to celebrate science while having a great time!

WHAT: Oak Grove Elementary School Student Science Fair

WHEN: Science Fair Date – Tuesday, January 10, 2017 from 5:30pm – 6:30pm
(In case of inclement weather we will reschedule for Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017)

Project Entry Form Due Date – December 13, 2016

WHERE: Oak Grove Multipurpose Room

WHO: All Oak Grove students – individuals or groups (max 3 in a group). Class projects are encouraged, but are not eligible to be judged. Kindergarten, first, and second grade students may participate as non-judged entries. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students have the option of being judged or non-judged.

HOW: See the entry forms and other links at the bottom of this post. All forms must be signed by a parent and have a legible parent email or phone number.

WHY: To celebrate science and research new information! It’s FUN!

WINNERS: 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, and 5th Grade Winners will receive a paid entry fee to the 2017 NCSEF Central Regional-3A Science Fair (scheduled for February 11, 2017 at Hillside HS)

Oak Grove Family Sports Night

When: November 15, 2016 from 5:30-7:00
Location: the school gym

Please join us for the 3rd annual Oak Grove Sports Night. We will have representatives from Championship Martial Arts and USTA leading demonstrations and getting students in on the activities. We will also have an opportunity for students to do yoga and participate in Zumba with our very own 1st grade teacher Mrs. Mendzef. We are also looking forward to visits from Ms. Wuf and the Athens Band. The best part is this is all free. You can also enjoy dinner that evening with us. Three Amigos will be selling tacos and Little Ceasars will have pizza slices.We will have raffle items from: Alpha Athletics, Three Amigos, Spiritwear, Championship Martial Arts, and Warrior Tech. Students should wear their favorite team jersey to school and to sports night.

Our book fair is coming soon!

twitter_image_hookedBook Fair is right around the corner! Don’t forget that you can visit us at our online store October 12th-25th, 2016!! Christmas gifts abound, me hearties!

This week, we’re running a spare change contest! Teachers have a bucket in their rooms to collect coins. The classroom in each grade who brings in the most change by Friday, October 14th, 2016 will earn a reward!! ((Track 4, you will have your own personal days to collect your bucket money, so never fear!! You get to participate, me hearties!)) The money goes to help make sure EVERY CHILD in our school gets a book from the fair. Any leftover proceeds go to the library.

Get ready for the Oak Grove Spirit Night at Chik-Fil-A!

Chik-Fil-A at Waverly Place is holding a Spirit Night fundraiser for our school on Wednesday, October 27th from 4 PM until 8PM. There will be an ice dream bar (pay for the ice dream and all toppings are free); a Spinning Wheel with prizes ($1 donation to spin the wheel); AND Oak Grove gets a percentage of the sales from all receipts that say they are there for our school. Invite your friends, family and neighbors to stop by, have fun and support our Oak Grove otters!
